Do you enjoy a book that makes you laugh out loud? I do. I was reading "On Second Thought" while I was working out on the bicycle at my local YMCA and I came to one of those parts that are laugh out loud funny. It is hard to laugh, pedal, hold onto the book and maintain your workout composure all at the same time. I got some weird looks from the people around me. My point is, this book is funny. The author made a good effort to put humor into every situation - and it worked. I was constantly amused through the whole thing.
It starts out with Walt Stewart who thinks he has his life planned out - then his fiancee runs off with his roommate. At the very moment that Walt can choose to run after his fiancee and salvage their relationship - the phone rings. Walt chooses to answer the phone. This phone call changes his life and puts him in Alamitos, New Mexico as the head of personnel for a tomato growing greenhouse. He is drawn into the mystery surrounding the local observatory and as an added bonus meets the girl of his dreams. But when he is hit over the head and left for dead in the desert - will they have the possiblity of a future together?
"First of all," I said, trying to calm my anger and make a coherent statement, "if your hairdresser is actually doing that, they're breaking several major laws. Second, just because Clara's not welcome there doesn't mean she's not welcome here. And third . . . "
"What?" she asked bitterly.
I couldn't think of a good third. I could think of several random ideas, but my mind was swirling with anger and I couldn't come up with any more logical arguments.
"Third. . . well . . . your beauty parlor would be lucky to have someone as beautiful as Clara go in there."
There was silence. I had, unwittingly, confounded my attacker simply by making a totally illogical statement. Clara's beauty could not be argued, and, while it had absolutely nothing to do with allowing observatory employees to come to church, Sister Gutierrez couldn't seem to come up with a response."
This book is a suspenseful, romantic, interesting and above all - funny! I will read this over and over because I enjoyed it so much. I recommend it to all who enjoy humor and a good story at the same time.
