Whisperings by C.K. Bailey

”Please, Daddy….It’s dark down here…. Please don’t leave….The light, Daddy. Turn on the light!” Jessie awoke wet with perspiration. She embraced the moist feather pillow.

Sleep was a distant illusion.

So begins Whisperings by C.K. Bailey. Jessie Winston, a licensed therapist, knows how to help others with their problems. But the recent death of her father triggers old nightmares that start to interfere with her daily life. Her boss, Elliott, insists that she get help from Dr. Ryan Blake, a former therapist with his own demons to fight. As a therapist, Jessie knows the benefit of opening up and discussing her problems, but as a person she can’t fight her fear of her own past and exposing old wounds. Slowly, she starts to trust Ryan and together they both start to face the things of their past that haunt them.

This book had me from the first paragraph. I was drawn in so completely that I did nothing but read for one entire day. I took this book in the car, read during meals and didn’t go to bed until I was finished. The writing is excellent, the plot interesting and suspenseful and C. K. Bailey knows how to keep her reader enthralled. My only complaint is that the story did not feel completely wrapped up when it was done. I am a reader who likes to know that the story is finished and that I can walk away from the characters without wondering what happens next. I felt that there were a few loose ends, but I am hopeful that there will be a sequel to finish up the story. I do recommend this book, but realize that the plot is not completely tied up neatly at the end.
