"For her birthday he sent Stephanie a card and two hundred dollars. As he dropped the blue envelope in the mailbox, he said a short prayer that no one-especially their father-would steal the money.
Three weeks later Michael opened the mailbox to find a letter from Stephanie. Sitting on the top step leading into his apartment, Michael read how grateful Stephanie was for the money. Dad said it should go to him, but he didn't take it. I needed it since I left the next day. Carl came and picked me up. I think Mom felt bad, but you never know what Mom's thinking. Dad was surprised. Got really mad. You know the routine.
Michael did."
For as long as he could remember, the most prevalent thing on Michael’s mind had been escape—escape from the pain, escape from the man who inflicted it, and escape from the hopelessness of his dusty Nevada home. To Michael, Utah seems like the perfect place to begin a new life.
But after years of molding himself into the man his father never thought he could be, Michael must numb himself to pain once again as he lays broken and bleeding in the red desert sand. Will he ever see his loving wife Laura again—or the child they have come to love as their own?
This is a really good book. I learned about mental illness, serving others, unconditional love, cycles of abuse, and how to have faith. I was captivated through the whole book and after I was done - I was especially motivated to serve those around me. I recommend this book to everyone and look forward to reading more books by this author.
